About NGO Safe
NGO Safe is an open-source directory of verified women's support organisations in South Africa. Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for people in need — and the NGOs helping them — to find the right services quickly.
Every organisation in our directory is checked against multiple data sources. We pull information from the Google Places API, the Department of Social Development's NPO Register, and direct outreach. Each listing receives a quality score based on how much we've been able to verify.
This project started with a focus on women's services and GBV support, and has since expanded to cover all 9 provinces of South Africa with police stations, hospitals, and emergency services.
How the Quality Score Works
Each organisation gets a score from 0 to 100 based on:
- Registration (25 pts) — Active on the DSD NPO register
- Contactability (25 pts) — Working phone, email, and website
- Physical presence (20 pts) — Verified address, geocoded location, Google says operational
- Reputation (15 pts) — Google rating and number of reviews
- Completeness (15 pts) — Has a description, service tags, and listed opening hours
A score of 60+ earns a "Verified" badge. These scores are recalculated regularly as we gather more data.
Important Disclaimer
While we do our best to verify the information in this directory, we cannot guarantee that all details are accurate or up to date. Always contact an organisation directly to confirm services, availability, and operating hours before visiting. In an emergency, call 10111 (SAPS) immediately.
