AHOS — Abused and Homeless Organisation Shelter

Verified Open

AHOS — the Abused and Homeless Organisation Shelter — grew out of a simple, powerful idea: a group of women from five Paarl churches who looked at the abuse and homelessness in their community and decided to do something about it. Founded in 1999 and registered as an NPO in 2001, AHOS has since grown into a One-Stop Victim Empowerment Centre serving women and children in the Paarl Municipality area.

About

AHOS — the Abused and Homeless Organisation Shelter — grew out of a simple, powerful idea: a group of women from five Paarl churches who looked at the abuse and homelessness in their community and decided to do something about it. Founded in 1999 and registered as an NPO in 2001, AHOS has since grown into a One-Stop Victim Empowerment Centre serving women and children in the Paarl Municipality area.

Their model is holistic — they recognise that GBV does not exist in isolation from poverty, homelessness, disability, and age, and their services reflect that understanding.

What They Offer Survivors

Emergency Shelter for Abused Women and Children AHOS provides safe residential shelter for women and children who have fled domestic violence and abuse. Only women and children from the Paarl Municipality area are admitted. The shelter provides a roof, safety, and a starting point for rebuilding life after abuse.

One-Stop Victim Empowerment Centre AHOS operates as a One-Stop centre — meaning survivors can access multiple forms of support under one roof without having to navigate multiple organisations. The centre makes provision for women and children of all abilities, including those with disabilities, and extends its services to elderly residents where appropriate.

Psychosocial Support and Counselling Support for the emotional and psychological impact of abuse is provided — helping survivors process their experiences, develop coping strategies, and begin the healing journey.

Skills Training and Empowerment Practical skills training helps residents build toward independence — equipping women to provide for themselves and their children after leaving the shelter.

Referral and Follow-Up Services AHOS offers transport, street work, and follow-up support — going beyond the shelter walls to continue supporting women as they reintegrate into the community.

Awareness and Community Education Community awareness programmes are run to educate the broader Paarl community about GBV, prevention, and available support.

AHOS serves women and children in the Paarl Municipal area. For shelter access or support, call 021 872 3764.
