Child Welfare SA Nelspruit is Mpumalanga's anchor child protection organisation for Nelspruit (Mbombela) and surrounds — operating from 10 Ehmke Street with two community service points at Mataffin Woodhouse and Mataffin Newskom. Affiliated with the Child Welfare South Africa network and carrying full statutory child protection mandates under the Children's Act, it provides the complete spectrum of child welfare services: professional intake, abuse and neglect assessment and investigation, crisis intervention, therapeutic support, legal and court support (including Children's Court), mediation, and alternative care placements (temporary safe care, foster care, Child and Youth Care Centre placement, and adoption). Equally important is its family preservation and early intervention work — prevention programmes, parenting support, and family preservation services aimed at strengthening families so that children can remain safely at home wherever possible. Child Welfare SA Nelspruit operates at the intersection of child protection and family welfare in a province where both are acutely stretched. Mpumalanga — large, partly rural, marked by poverty, labour migrancy, and significant gaps in social infrastructure — has high rates of child vulnerability. Nelspruit (officially Mbombela) is the provincial capital and the organisation's base. From 10 Ehmke Street, and two community service points in the Mataffin area, Child Welfare SA Nelspruit provides the full statutory and non-statutory child welfare service mandate to children and families across the city and surrounding communities.

The organisation is affiliated with Child Welfare South Africa — the national umbrella body — and is mandated to act under the Children's Act and related legislation.

Who They Serve

Child Welfare SA Nelspruit works with abandoned, neglected, exploited, and orphaned children, and with families under acute stress. In the GBV context, this includes: children who have witnessed domestic violence; children who have experienced sexual or physical abuse within the family; children of women in shelter who need temporary safe care; children removed from home because a parent is incarcerated, hospitalised, or unable to provide safe care; and families where domestic violence is a child protection risk even where the primary victim is an adult.

Professional Intervention Services

Intake, Assessment, and Investigation Professional intake assessments and formal statutory investigations of reported child abuse, neglect, and exploitation — conducted by trained social workers in accordance with the Children's Act.

Crisis Intervention Emergency intervention when a child is in immediate danger — including emergency placement in temporary safe care where necessary.

Therapeutic Support Counselling and psychosocial support for children and families who have experienced abuse, trauma, or family breakdown — including play therapy and trauma-focused work for children.

Legal and Court Support Social workers provide support through Children's Court, protective order processes, statutory investigations, court reports, and mediation — including accompanying children and families through formal legal proceedings.

Alternative Care

For children who cannot safely remain in their family home: - Temporary safe care — emergency placement with a vetted foster family or facility - Foster care — longer-term placement under court order - Child and Youth Care Centre placement — residential facility placement - Adoption — facilitation of legal adoption for children who cannot be reunified with family

Family Preservation and Early Intervention

Child Welfare SA Nelspruit places strong emphasis on keeping families safely together through prevention programmes, parenting support, and family preservation interventions addressing the underlying challenges — poverty, substance abuse, domestic violence, parental mental health — that create conditions for child abuse and neglect. Removal is always a last resort; family strengthening is the first goal.
