About Childline South Africa

Childline South Africa is a leading child protection organisation that operates a free, confidential, 24-hour toll-free crisis helpline at 116 (free from all networks). The helpline receives over 300,000 calls annually from children up to age 18 and concerned adults.

Trained counsellors provide support in the caller's preferred language on issues including physical, sexual and emotional abuse, neglect, trafficking, domestic violence, bullying, depression, suicidal thoughts, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, and family and relationship problems.

Services

• 24-hour crisis helpline (116) — immediate telephonic counselling for children and adults.
• Online counselling — available Monday to Friday via the Childline website.
• Face-to-face counselling — individual therapeutic counselling at Childline offices for child victims of abuse and their families.
• Prevention and education — programmes delivered in schools and communities to raise awareness of child abuse and children's rights.
• Court preparation — helping child witnesses prepare for court proceedings.
• Training — volunteer counsellor training and child law workshops for professionals.
• Risk assessment and referral — when a child is in immediate danger, Childline refers to police and the Department of Social Development for emergency intervention.

Who Can Access These Services

Any child (up to age 18) or concerned adult can call 116 at any time, day or night. The call is free from any phone. Face-to-face counselling is available at Childline offices by appointment.
