About

Gender DynamiX (GDX), founded in Cape Town in 2005, is the first registered Africa-based organisation to focus solely on the rights, health, and wellbeing of transgender and gender diverse people. For nearly 20 years they have been at the forefront of advancing trans rights in South Africa, across the African continent, and globally. They are a small but profoundly impactful organisation — advocating in courts, in communities, in government, and in healthcare systems to ensure trans and gender diverse people are treated with dignity, equality, and respect.

This organisation is especially relevant if you are a transgender, non-binary, or gender diverse survivor. GBV, sexual violence, and discrimination are experienced at disproportionately high rates within trans and gender diverse communities, and most mainstream services are not designed with your needs in mind. GDX exists to change that.

What They Offer Trans and Gender Diverse Survivors

Advocacy and Legal Support GDX advocates directly for the rights of trans survivors within legal and justice systems — challenging discrimination and pushing for laws and institutions that protect, rather than harm, gender diverse people. They have successfully litigated landmark cases, including winning the right for transgender prisoners to express their gender identity.

Gender-Affirming Healthcare Navigation Trans survivors often face enormous barriers in accessing appropriate medical care — including hormone therapy, gender-affirming surgery, and mental health support. GDX provides guidance on healthcare rights and connects people with gender-affirming healthcare providers, including through the South African Trans Health Initiative. They maintain a directory of healthcare providers who are affirming and knowledgeable.

Sistaazhood Partnership (Street-Based Trans Women) GDX works in close partnership with Sistaazhood — a support group created specifically for street-based transgender sex workers in and around the Cape Town CBD. This community is among the most marginalised and vulnerable to violence and exploitation, and Sistaazhood serves as a haven and support structure for them.

Refugee and Asylum-Seeker Support GDX specifically supports transgender refugees and asylum seekers — a group that faces compounding vulnerabilities, including fear of Home Affairs, barriers to documentation, and extreme vulnerability to violence. If you are a trans refugee in South Africa, GDX can help you understand your rights and navigate the asylum process.

Education and 'Trans 101' Training GDX offers sensitisation training for organisations, healthcare providers, and government institutions to help create more informed and safer environments for trans people when they seek services. This means that if you access services through organisations that have worked with GDX, you are more likely to be treated with respect and understanding.

Community Mobilisation and Visibility GDX leads South Africa's National Gender Diversity Coalition, creates platforms for trans voices, and works to build a society where trans people are visible, safe, and fully included. Their research and publications document the experiences of trans communities, creating an evidence base for change.

If you are a trans or gender diverse survivor and are not sure where to start — contact GDX. They can help connect you to appropriate support services, healthcare, and legal resources.
