About
About the Mahikeng Thuthuzela Care Centre
The Mahikeng TCC is a government-operated, 24-hour one-stop facility for survivors of rape, sexual assault, and gender-based violence. It is located at Mafikeng Provincial Hospital, Lichtenburg Road, Mahikeng (Mafikeng), 2745, in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality, North West province.
Mahikeng is the capital of North West province. The TCC serves Mahikeng and surrounding communities of the Ngaka Modiri Molema District — an area covering Lichtenburg, Zeerust, Coligny, and a vast rural hinterland with limited access to specialist GBV services.
It is operated by the NPA's SOCA Unit in partnership with the North West Department of Health and other government departments.
Spelling Note
The city is officially named Mahikeng (the restored Tswana spelling) since approximately 2010, though "Mafikeng" continues to appear in widespread use — including on the hospital's own name. Both refer to the same city and the same TCC.
Services Offered — What Happens When You Arrive
The TCC model provides the most comprehensive pre-trial services for victims of gender-based violence — psychosocial, medical, and legal services under one roof — with a victim-centred approach based on respect, comfort, restoring dignity, and ensuring justice for all vulnerable groups.
At the Mahikeng TCC:
- Welcome and crisis support from a TCC Coordinator or Victim Assistant Officer immediately upon arrival
- Medical examination with your consent; nurse present; clothing may be taken as forensic evidence
- Bath or shower after the examination
- Police statement taken at the TCC; case may be opened immediately or at a later stage
- Counselling by a social worker or nurse
- HIV PEP, STI treatment, emergency contraception prescribed; follow-up appointment arranged
- Long-term counselling referral made before discharge
- Transportation or place of safety arranged if needed
- Specialist TCC State Advocate conducts prosecutor-guided investigation (PGI) and oversees your case from reporting to prosecution
- Court preparation if the case proceeds to trial
- Ongoing case updates via the Victim Assistant Officer
Child-Friendly Services
TCCs are equipped with child-friendly furniture, two-way mirrors, closed-circuit TV, and educational materials to support child victims and witnesses in giving testimony safely.
Additional Services
The TCC also provides food, comfort packs, and clothing as part of restoring the dignity of the victim.
