PHOLA

sychosocial support and trauma healing organisation; community and mobile model; culturally-rooted, Ubuntu-based therapeutic approach; not a GBV shelter or crisis service — a trauma counselling, healing, and capacity-building organisation **Programmes:** **1. Phola Mama — Women and Girls** Helping women and girls heal from trauma, rediscover their strength, and rise as confident leaders within their communities. This is Phola's most directly GBV-relevant programme — designed specifically for women and girls who have experienced abuse, exploitation, trauma, and rights violations. Services include trauma-informed psychosocial support, identity reconstruction, group healing, and community leadership development for women. **2. Phola Baba — Men and Boys** Inspiring men and boys to heal, grow, and embrace positive masculinity rooted in empathy, accountability, and respect. GBV prevention through transformative work with men and boys; addressing the socialisation that enables violence; therapeutic support for men who have experienced trauma. **3. Phola Sana — Children** Nurturing children's wellbeing through trauma-informed care that builds resilience, safety, and hope for the future. Specific psychosocial support for children exposed to or experiencing violence and trauma — including children in GBV-affected households. **4. Phola Intsha — Youth** Empowering youth to heal from trauma, find purpose, and lead confidently through mental health and life-skills support. Adolescents and young adults navigating trauma, identity, and social pressures — including peer violence, sexual violence, and family dysfunction. **5. Phola Mndeni — Families** Strengthening families through Ubuntu-based healing that rebuilds connection, harmony, and emotional wellbeing at home. Family-focused therapeutic and support work — healing the relational fabric torn by trauma, abuse, and violence. **6. Phola Sisebenzi — Workplaces** Psychosocial support and mental health capacity-building for workplaces — addressing the carry-over of unresolved trauma and GBV impact into professional environments. **Delivery approach:** - Mobile trauma counselling and mental health services to underserved communities — particularly women and children - Safe houses and respite facilities for women and children experiencing violence and rights violations (listed as an objective) - Design of culturally appropriate mental health and psychosocial tools in collaboration with trauma-affected individuals - Training and capacity-building for mental health professionals and community-based practitioners in indigenous knowledge systems - Individual and group-based healing programmes - Community outreach and psychosocial first response (COVID-19 psychosocial work scaled up nationally during pandemic)

About

Founded in 2016 by Ncazelo Mlilo with a clear and courageous vision: to heal the deep, unresolved trauma of South African communities using therapeutic approaches that are genuinely culturally rooted rather than "psychologically colonising." "Phola" means to heal in isiZulu — and that is precisely the work: trauma healing and psychosocial support for women, girls, men, boys, children, youth, and families through an Ubuntu-based, Afrocentric framework that integrates indigenous knowledge systems with contemporary psychosocial practice. Phola delivers six interconnected programmes: Phola Mama (women and girls — healing from abuse, rediscovering strength, rising as community leaders), Phola Baba (men and boys — healing, positive masculinity, accountability), Phola Sana (children — trauma-informed care, resilience, safety), Phola Intsha (youth — mental health and life-skills), Phola Mndeni (families — Ubuntu-based relational healing), and Phola Sisebenzi (workplaces). Delivery is mobile and community-based — bringing services to underserved communities, particularly women and children. Phola also trains practitioners nationally and internationally (phola-international.co.uk) in culturally sensitive trauma approaches. For immediate GBV crisis: 0800 428 428 (toll-free, 24/7).
