About
About Rays of Hope
Rays of Hope is a registered NPO that has been embedded in the Alexandra Township community in Johannesburg since 1991. What began as a single project has grown into a network of community-based programmes focused on education support, psychosocial wellbeing, and family care. The organisation works closely with community leaders, the SAPS, local schools, the Alexandra Clinic, and the Department of Social Development — enabling an integrated, community-wide response to the challenges facing residents of Alex.
GBV and Counselling Services
Rays of Hope's psychosocial support department is staffed by qualified and experienced social workers and social auxiliary workers. Their counselling services explicitly include gender-based violence care and support, offered to youth, adults, children, and families. This includes trauma counselling, grief and bereavement support, and structured support for survivors of abuse. Home visits are conducted as part of a holistic, wraparound approach to care that extends support beyond the counselling room.
Support for Women and Teen Mothers
Rays of Hope runs a dedicated Teen Moms Support Group, providing counselling, material assistance (baby clothing, nappies, food), and antenatal and postnatal education — recognising the particular vulnerability of young mothers in communities affected by GBV. The programme actively encourages teen mothers to continue their education and build toward independent futures.
Family and Community Programmes
Beyond individual counselling, Rays of Hope offers Parenting Workshops to equip caregivers with positive, non-violent parenting tools — building family resilience and reducing the intergenerational transmission of violence. Their Teens Club provides a safe weekly space for adolescents to develop life skills, values, and trusted relationships with trained facilitators. SASSA grant application assistance and family home visits provide additional practical support to families in crisis.
Reach
Rays of Hope currently has approximately 400 children and their families actively enrolled in programmes, and has impacted thousands more through the years. Their Alex office is located at 2 Lupin Ave, Marlboro Gardens, with an administrative office in Hurlingham, Sandton.
