About
About RIET
The Rural Institute for Education and Training (RIET) was established in 1990 as a non-governmental welfare and educational organisation dedicated to the promotion and protection of the rights of women and children in South Africa. It is registered as NPO 000-377 and is approved under Section 18A(1)(a) of the Income Tax Act, allowing donors to receive tax-deductible receipts.
RIET's founding mission centres on the dignity, development, and protection of women and children of all races, regardless of age, creed, socio-economic status, physical or mental capacity, or sexual orientation. The organisation is governed by a management committee elected from its membership.
The Grabouw Family Guidance Centre
The Grabouw branch of RIET operates as a Family Guidance Centre in the Pineview community, one of the most vulnerable townships in the Overberg region. Located at 13 U Save Building, Gaffley Street, Grabouw, the centre serves women, children, and families living in an area characterised by seasonal farm labour, high unemployment, and elevated rates of domestic violence and child abuse — especially during off-seasons when poverty and stress intensify.
Services
RIET's services are centred on the most pressing needs of the communities they serve and include:
- Counselling and emotional support for women and children affected by abuse, domestic violence, and trauma.
- Support for women living with HIV/AIDS, combining welfare support with rights-based advocacy and health education.
- Child protection services, including guidance on reporting abuse, court processes, and engagement with the Department of Social Development.
- Family guidance covering parenting support, relationships, and family wellbeing.
- Community education and awareness campaigns on GBV, child rights, substance abuse, and women's rights.
- Referral services connecting survivors to medical, legal, and social support networks in the broader Overberg.
Community Significance
Grabouw sits at the heart of the Western Cape's fruit farming belt. Its townships — Pineview and Snake Park — house a large migrant population whose vulnerability spikes during seasonal shifts. RIET's on-the-ground presence in this community makes it one of the most practically accessible support structures for survivors who might not reach city-based organisations.
