About
About the Salvation Army – Limpopo Division
The Salvation Army Limpopo Division is the regional coordinating body for the Salvation Army's corps, shelters, and community programmes across Limpopo province. Its Divisional Headquarters is located in Makhado (formerly Louis Trichardt), in the Vhembe District Municipality of Limpopo.
Note: The SAVF Maroela Krisishuis shelter in Ba-Phalaborwa also falls within the Limpopo province and may be an affiliated programme — refer to that entry for a residential shelter option in the Mopani district.
Role of the Divisional HQ
The Limpopo DHQ coordinates and supports local corps and community service points across the province. It serves as the primary liaison for:
- Routing clients to the nearest Salvation Army corps or programme
- Coordinating emergency GBV and welfare responses
- Liaising with Limpopo DSD, SAPS, and partner organisations
- Overseeing Limpopo's implementation of national Salvation Army programmes
Services Through the Division
Aligned with the national Work with Abused Women and Children programme, the Limpopo Division's corps and outreach services include:
- Crisis support and practical assistance for women and children escaping domestic violence or abusive situations
- Referrals to specialist GBV services, shelters, and government facilities
- Emergency food parcels, clothing, and material relief
- Counselling and psychosocial support referrals
- Anti-human trafficking awareness and intervention (Limpopo is a high-risk corridor for human trafficking given its border location)
- Children's and youth welfare programmes
- Community support groups and family welfare services
- Spiritual care and pastoral support
Geographical Context
Limpopo is one of South Africa's most rural provinces, with large stretches of communities underserved by specialist GBV organisations. The Salvation Army's network of corps provides a critical welfare safety net in areas where formal NGO presence is limited. The division also has relevance to cross-border issues given Limpopo's proximity to Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Botswana.
Who They Serve
Women, children, and families across Limpopo province affected by domestic violence, gender-based violence, poverty, or family crisis. Open to all regardless of religion, race, or ability to pay.
