SAVF Tzaneen

The SAVF is one of South Africa’s oldest social welfare organizations (established in 1904). While they serve all people, they have a massive infrastructure dedicated to child protection and family wellness. For a GBV survivor, the SAVF is a powerful resource for practical, "wrap-around" support—including shelter, social workers, and legal help.

What They Offer Survivors

Shelters and Safe Spaces The SAVF manages a network of shelters and safe houses across South Africa. These provide a physical refuge for women and children escaping domestic violence, offering safety when home is no longer an option.

Social Work Services They have a large team of professional social workers who provide statutory services (legal support, child custody assistance) and therapeutic counselling. They can assist with protection orders and navigating the Department of Social Development.

Child and Youth Care Centers For survivors with children, the SAVF provides specialized child protection services. If children have been affected by domestic violence or sexual abuse, they offer a nurturing environment and professional intervention to help the children heal.

Economic Empowerment and Skills Training Knowing that financial dependence often keeps survivors in abusive situations, the SAVF provides skills development and poverty eradication programs to help survivors become financially independent.

Foster Care and Family Support They offer comprehensive family care, including assistance with foster care placements if a survivor is temporarily unable to care for their children while seeking safety or medical treatment.

HIV/AIDS Support Programs They provide targeted support for those affected by HIV, which is often a critical intersection for survivors of sexual violence.
