About

About Sinawe Thuthuzela Care Centre

The Sinawe Thuthuzela Care Centre is located in Mthatha, Eastern Cape Province. Sinawe means "we are with you" in Xhosa. In 2012-2013, the Sinawe Centre won an award for being the best-run care centre in South Africa.

The Centre is located across the road from Mthatha General Hospital (now Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital) and was established in 2001. The building was completed by UNICEF in 2012 with funding from the Danish government and USAID.

Dr. Nomonde Ndyalvan heads the Sinawe Centre. She started as a volunteer in 2002 and moved to work full time at the centre in March 2009.

Scale of Operations

The centre sees about 60 to 80 patients a month on a low season. During holidays and festive seasons, rape cases go up to between 100 and 120 per month. The centre covers patients from as far as 200km away, going beyond OR Tambo municipality. OR Tambo is one of South Africa's poorest municipalities in the country's most poverty-stricken province.
