About Steinthal Children's Home (Steinthal CYCC)

Steinthal Child and Youth Care Centre (popularly known as Steinthal Kinderhuis) is located on Steinthal Landgoed (Steinthal Estate), Stand 11, Steinthal Road, Tulbagh, Western Cape, 6820. The Centre has been in operation since 1961 and is a programme of BADISA (NPO 011-891) — a joint ministry of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) and the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa (URCSA) in the Cape, providing social welfare services across the Western Cape.

Steinthal is situated in the picturesque Tulbagh Valley in the Cape Winelands — a rural area known for its fruit and wine farming. Despite its scenic context, many children in the Tulbagh area come from farm worker families facing poverty, alcohol abuse, and domestic violence. The Centre draws children from communities across the Breede Valley and surrounding Cape Winelands districts.

Registration

Steinthal is registered as a Child and Youth Care Centre (CYCC) with the Western Cape Department of Social Development in terms of the Children's Act (Act 38 of 2005) — meaning it is legally authorised to provide residential care to children outside their family environment.

Services

Residential Care — a secure, structured, home-like environment for children placed by the Children's Court. Children come from a range of circumstances including sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, abandonment, parental substance abuse, family breakdown, and failed foster care placements.

Therapeutic Treatment — the Centre's multidisciplinary team (including social workers, child and youth care workers, and specialist consultants) assesses each child and develops an individualised treatment plan. Therapeutic interventions address the specific trauma and developmental needs of each child.

Education Support — children attend local schools while residing at Steinthal, with educational support provided to assist with learning challenges and school reintegration.

Recreational and Social Development — sport, cultural, and recreational programmes build social bonds, community spirit, and healthy development.

Reintegration Programme — when appropriate, Steinthal works toward the reunification of children with their families or transition to foster care or independent living, with structured exit plans and ongoing social work support.

GBV Relevance

Sexual abuse and domestic violence are among the primary reasons children are placed at Steinthal. The Centre plays a critical role in the Cape Winelands GBV response ecosystem as a residential placement option for child survivors who cannot safely return to their home environments.
