About

About the Kopanong Thuthuzela Care Centre

The Kopanong Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) is a government-operated, 24-hour one-stop facility for survivors of rape, sexual assault, and gender-based violence. It is located at Kopanong Hospital, No. 2 Casino Road, Duncanville, Vereeniging, 1939, in the Sedibeng District Municipality, southern Gauteng.

It is operated by the NPA's Sexual Offences and Community Affairs (SOCA) Unit in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Health and other government departments, and serves the broader Sedibeng District — including Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark, Sebokeng, Evaton, and surrounding communities.

Services Offered — What Happens When You Arrive

The TCC model provides the most comprehensive pre-trial services for victims of gender-based violence — psychosocial, medical, and legal — adopting a victim-centred approach based on respect, comfort, restoring dignity, and ensuring justice for all vulnerable groups.

The complete process at the Kopanong TCC:

  1. Welcome and crisis support: a trained TCC Coordinator or Victim Assistant Officer receives you immediately and provides comfort and initial trauma support
  2. Medical examination: a doctor or nurse examines you with your consent; a nurse is present throughout; clothing may be retained as forensic evidence
  3. Bath or shower: facilities are available for your use after the medical examination
  4. Police statement: a police officer will take your statement at the TCC — you may open a case immediately or choose to do so later
  5. Counselling: a social worker or nurse provides psychological first aid and counselling during and after the process
  6. Medical treatment: HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), STI prophylaxis, and emergency contraception are prescribed and a follow-up appointment is arranged
  7. Long-term counselling referral: a referral or appointment for ongoing counselling support is made before you leave
  8. Transportation or safe accommodation: a police officer arranges transport home, or you are referred to a place of safety if you cannot safely return home
  9. Specialist TCC State Advocate: a dedicated prosecutor oversees your case through prosecutor-guided investigation (PGI) from reporting through to conviction
  10. Court preparation: a Court Preparation Officer will prepare you for giving evidence if the case proceeds to trial
  11. Ongoing case communication: the Victim Assistant Officer keeps you informed at every stage

Child-Friendly Services

TCCs are child-friendly environments equipped with specialised furniture, two-way mirrors, closed-circuit TV, and educational materials to support child victims and witnesses in telling their story safely.

Additional Services

The TCC also provides additional services to address the needs of the victim regarding food, comfort packs, and clothing as part of restoring the dignity of the victim.
