About

About the Victim Empowerment Programme – Dimbaza

The Dimbaza VEP is located on Siwani Street, Dimbaza, 5671 — the same address as the Dimbaza SAPS station (040 656 4300). This co-location is the standard model for government-funded Victim Empowerment Programmes: by positioning support workers at or within police stations, survivors who report crimes can be immediately connected to psychosocial care, reducing the additional barriers of having to travel elsewhere to access support.

Community Context

Dimbaza is a township established during the apartheid era in the Amahlathi Local Municipality (Keiskammahoek area), situated approximately 35km from King William's Town and 70km from East London. Like many apartheid-era townships, it was built to house relocated communities with no economic base, and continues to face very high unemployment, poverty, and limited social services. GBV rates in the area are consistent with national patterns, and the VEP is a critical first point of care.

Services

The Dimbaza VEP typically provides: - Immediate on-site psychosocial support for victims presenting at the police station following incidents of GBV, rape, domestic violence, or other violent crime. - Trauma counselling and debriefing — first-response emotional support and referral for ongoing therapy. - Victim rights information — explaining to survivors what their rights are, the criminal justice process, and what to expect after reporting. - Referrals to shelters, health facilities, legal services, and DSD social workers for further statutory intervention. - Community outreach in Dimbaza and surrounding villages in the Amahlathi area.
