About

About Wits Student Support and GBV Services

The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) provides dedicated GBV and crisis support to its student body through two coordinated services.

Gender Equity Office (GEO) — provides a safe and confidential space with full-time counselling support to complainants and victims of GBV; confidentially advises complainants and victims of GBV of their options; and oversees an independent disciplinary procedure for formal complaints against staff or students accused of GBH, and engages actively in advocacy around gender equality. The GEO is the formal institutional mechanism for GBV complaints and survivor support at Wits.

Counselling and Careers Development Unit (CCDU) — offers emergency counselling via telephone through the Wits Student Crisis Line 0800 111 331 (toll free 24/7/365). The CCDU also provides individual therapy, trauma debriefing, and group counselling for registered students.

Wits Student Crisis Texting App — real-time crisis counselling through live chat (ICAS On-the-Go app, company code WIT001), available for students who prefer text-based support.

Note on "WITS SRC Crisis Centre"

Your source listing refers to "WITS SRC Crisis Centre" — the current correct name for the formal GBV structure is the Gender Equity Office (GEO) working alongside the CCDU. The SRC has separately been involved in GBV advocacy and hosting mass meetings for survivors. Both the GEO and the Student Crisis Line are the operationally active support mechanisms.
